cult aussie brand now in singapore

Popular boutique Trove Shop in Esplanade Mall has just announced that it will now stock cult Australian brand, Alice McCall.
Known for its girlish charm, sharp cuts and rock ‘n’ roll sensibility, Alice McCall shows at London Fashion Week and has over 165 stores in 10 countries. Fans of the mid-priced label include Natalie Imbruglia, Diane Kruger and Chloe Sevigny.

finally; jeans to fit your shape

It might have been the venue -- one of Singapore’s top clubs, Zouk -- or it might have been the fact that the event was dedicated to women’s curves, but there were more men than usual at the Levi’s Curve ID launch on Thursday, September 2, than would normally turn up for a fashion event.
The fact that an iconic jeans brand had spent a great deal of research time and money on creating a line of jeans designed specifically to fit women’s bodies better, highlights the impact that the financial crisis has had on the fashion and garment manufacturing industries.

counting by the numbers: a couture exhibition

One of Sweden's best-kept fashion secrets, Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair has opened it's first stand-alone store outside of Europe in Singapore.
As part of the celebrations, Singapore fashionistas were treated first to a VIP, invitation-only launch event last month, and now the By The No. special collection exhibition which was held on Friday, August 27.

affordable lanvin? when high street meets high end

Although we aren't lucky enough to have an H&M outlet in Singapore – the closest outlet is in Hong Kong and its online shop doesn’t deliver here – the recent drama over its next designer collaboration has been interesting to watch.
The brand launched teaser videos of a man and a woman talking about women and fashion, obscuring the faces but giving away hints in the voice-overs. Fashion bloggers around the world started guessing who – with Bottega Veneta designer Tomas Maier, Carolina Herrera and Pam Hogg all being considered contenders for the job.

stand up, speak out and actively resist (whatever you want)

Every now and then fashion stops being fickle and attempts to do something to justify its existence.
Sure, there are “fashion” fundraisers — everything from the local school to international organisations throwing catwalk shows to make a bit of cash — and “social awareness programmes” like Fashion’s Night Out which is just finishing up in New York, but more often than not, “fashion” is the entertainment and not the facilitator.

a new era for the occidental oriental blog

As some of you may know, or have noticed, I haven't been adding many stories to this blog over the past few weeks.
This is because as of September 1, I became the editor of herworld.com. This means that technically -- due to my work contract -- I can't have a private blog publishing the same content.
So, from now on, while there will sometimes be whole new stories that aren't entirely related to my new job on the blog, I'll be adding the introduction of a story and then sending readers off to my new website.
I do hope you won't mind :)
Please continue to check out Occidental Oriental for the stories I'm writing for herworld.com, as well as for the other bits and pieces that will uploaded.
Thanks!
